With so much negativity around our food systems, A Greener World serves as a beacon of positive change. We exist to promote and support real-life farming models to the public and to offer practical guidance on achieving truly sustainable livestock farming systems to farmers.

Established in 2014, our evolving mission has three key components:

  • To identify and promote agricultural systems that have a positive impact on the environment, society, and animals (both wild and farmed)
  • To educate consumers about the environmental, social, and animal welfare outcomes of their food purchasing decisions
  • To establish and promote a range of trusted farm certification programs that help reconnect the consumer and food producer by encouraging—and rewarding—positive farm management changes

We believe the way we farm, the nutritional quality of the meat, milk and eggs produced, and the impact of farming systems on wildlife, the environment and wider society are all connected. Our goal is to offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for anyone interested in food, farming, and sustainability, providing simple solutions based on your own personal concerns–whether you produce food or simply like to eat it!

Each of our programs is specifically designed to have positive and measurable impacts on the environment, society, and animals, and to encourage truly sustainable farming practices. Developed with scientists, veterinarians, experts, and farmers from across the globe, our farm standards and certification procedures are reassuringly robust and totally transparent, while remaining realistic and achievable for the farmer.

  • Animal Welfare Approved (AWA)

This program audits, certifies and promotes independent family farmers across the U.S. and Canada who raise livestock outdoors on pasture or range, using truly sustainable agriculture methods.
  • Certified Wildlife Friendly
    Is conserving key wildlife species and their habitats a key concern? The Certified Wildlife Friendly™ production standards for North America recognize—and reward—wildlife stewardship on farm and ranch lands. Participating producers employ a mix of proactive practices and careful observation to allow wildlife and livestock to coexist, valuing the ability of their operations to serve as habitat for wildlife species.
  • Predator Friendly
    Our iconic Predator Friendly® producers coexist with coyotes, bears, mountain lions and other wild animals. Through pasture management strategies, guardian animals such as dogs and llamas, and vigilant observation, our farmers and ranchers reduce the risk of conflict between livestock and wildlife. Our Leadership

Andrew Gunther is Project Director at A Greener World. In a former life, Andrew and his family pioneered the world’s first organic poultry hatchery for chickens in the United Kingdom, managing production for the largest independent organic chicken producer. After leaving farming, Andrew became the Senior Global Animal Compassionate Product Procurement and Development Specialist for Whole Foods Market, leading the team that designed and launched the company’s five-step welfare program in the UK. In 2008, Andrew became Program Director for Animal Welfare Approved and spearheaded the program’s unprecedented growth, increasing the number of approved farms tenfold, promoting farm viability for high-welfare livestock farmers and growing market strength. In 2014, he launched A Greener World as a source of positive solutions for the growing food and farming crisis.

Betsey Fortlouis is A Greener World’s Director of Partnerships and Development. Betsey has worked with nonprofits both large and small for her entire career, most recently as the Executive Director for Camp Corral, where she oversaw its national expansion and 700% growth. She worked as Vice President of Member Communications and Development at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) where she directed the communications, marketing, and fundraising programs, and as Deputy Chief Development and Membership Officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where she was responsible for building their ePhilanthropy program. Betsey is primarily responsible for membership and partnership activities, helping A Greener World and its programs grow to their full potential.
